Cocoa growing in Togo

The Kpalimé region is to the west of Togo’s highest peak, Mount Agou, and its land has historically grown cocoa and coffee. Togo has been producing cocoa for several decades, reaching its highest ever yield in the 1970s with 29,000 tons. However, volatile global markets, poor harvests and disease have all had an impact on cocoa farming in the country, causing production to slow over the past 50 years. It improved slightly in 2021-2022 with a crop of 6,000 tons.

A new partnership deal signed with the KC Union in 2024

After an excellent initial two years, we committed to a three-year partnership with the KC Union, which is due to run to 2027. The KC Union brings together 42 cooperatives made up of 779 producers.

Taking action for the environment and society together

2024-2027: our next joint agroforestry coaching project

Supporting the KC Union’s producers to adopt techniques offering greater resilience became a priority, given the challenges that needed to be overcome to keep supplies sustainable (including declining cacao trees, issues linked to growers’ age, and climate change). The joint coaching project is a three-year process which is tailored to the specific capacities of the producer and their plantation. This bespoke guidance is shaped around the issues and the opportunities producers face.

Impact

The project hasn’t yet had an impact. We anticipate it will boost plantations’ harvests, improve cocoa quality and increase producers’ income.
